What is the Act of Eating for Your Activity Level?

Most of us have heard the phrase and if you haven't you might in the future - “Eat According to Your Activity Level,” but what does that mean exactly? The answer can be a bit misleading because some of us need more calories than others and there are so many factors to take into consideration.

You need to first of all start looking at food as fuel! Food is definitely a fuel source, but the types of foods you eat, and the timing of when you eat them, as well as the amount of which you eat them all play factors. Your body size, your metabolism, and your age are also factors in how you might eat according to your activity level. A 20 year old with a high metabolism that runs 6 miles a day along with powerlifting 4 times a week might need to eat a little differently to fuel their body, verses a 50 year old with a slower metabolism that swims 2 miles every other day. As you can see no one is alike exactly. There are all types of formulas out there to guide you in the right direction on how to eat according to your activity level. The important part to remember is whatever you try to do, BE Consistent, and if there is no change after 6-8 weeks then change things up a bit. Listen to your body, it will tell you what it wants and what it doesn't want in order to perform and recover.
